Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA)

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA)

Written by Rob Quickenden, Cisilion’s Chief Strategy Officer

A key issue that I regularly discuss with my clients surrounds the explosion of data, and the challenge this presents for them in remaining compliant and protecting their information.

Many have invested in capabilities across the landscape of information protection and information governance, inclusive of archiving, retention, eDiscovery and communications supervision.

With many key players in this area, the latest Gartner report focuses on Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA). Here’s my key takeaway:

What is Enterprise Information Archiving?

Gartner defines Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA) as software that combines products and solutions for archiving user messaging content, such as email, files, instant messaging, SMS/text, public and business social media data, website data, and voice.

This also includes other content, such as data stored in content collaboration platforms (CCPs), content services platforms (CSPs), file systems and cloud offices.

About the Report

It’s important that Infrastructure and Operations leaders should remember that Gartners Magic Quadrant does not simply rate a product’s quality, capabilities and features. Although the product is an important component of the rating, the vendor’s ability to acquire and support customers, as well as grow product and service revenue, is an equally important factor.

My Key Gartner Research Highlights:

Microsoft provides native archival capabilities through traditional on-premises offerings, with Exchange and SharePoint.

Cloud-based archiving is provided by a suite of services in Office 365, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Skype for Business, Teams, and Microsoft file storage and sharing services.

Their products are tightly integrated with other Microsoft compliance offerings for e-discovery and legal hold use cases. Third-party content, such as social media, IM and messaging data, can be ingested by the Microsoft repository through partner offerings. Microsoft’s roadmap consists of additional first-party data connectors and enhanced supervision across content types, with proactive and reactive use cases with ML and AI.

Microsoft is also adding support for new geographic locations to address data sovereignty requirements, including continued investment for vertically focused solutions to target markets such as financial services.

Key Advantages

  • Microsoft has a proactive vision across Office 365 as an end-to-end suite for governance, compliance and information protection.
  • Brings architectural simplicity and ease of use for end-user archiving in Office 365, with native drag-and-drop and right-click archiving functions.
  • Customers praise the product support, including reporting and integration, with improved labeling and classification in the archive and advanced e-discovery features.
