A Virtual Private Network (VPN)
is a data network that acts like an extension of an enterprise's
private network but is, in fact, deployed over a shared infrastructure
- a service provider's shared network or the public Internet.
VPNs enable companies to share sensitive information with
remote offices, telecommuters, and business partners privately
or securely and for a fraction of the cost of traditional
approaches.
Until recently, the VPN landscape has been quite complex
as service providers have struggled with how best to accommodate
traditional access technologies (e.g., dial, Frame Relay)
along with new ones (e.g. Ethernet and wireless) and layer
3 VPNs over a common network infrastructure.
A new solution, enabling service providers to converge Layer
2 and Layer 3 services and provide legacy data services over
an IP or MPLS backbone, promises to simplify matters, and
enables the ability to transfer not only data but also video
and voice as this service will support Quality of Service
technology.
VPN Business Benefits:
- VPN's reduce the cost of remote users coming back into
the network. Users need only dial into a local service provider,
so the cost is only that of a local call, or in the case
of users who pay a monthly fixed Internet fee, it enables
the connection to be virtually free
- VPN's reduce the cost of purchasing or maintaining dialup
equipment as remote users can now come through the corporate
Internet connection
- VPN's increase the ease for scalability for increasing
remote user access
- VPN's increase the security level for the corporate network
whilst enabling remote users full access
Firewalls
Firewalls permit and deny user access onto the network. The
only way to make your computer completely secure is to turn
it off or disconnect it from the Internet. The real issue
is how to make your computer 99% secure when it is connected.
Stated another way, when was the last time you handed a stranger
your wallet and encouraged them to take your social security
card, drivers license, cash and credit cards. Internet security
and privacy products provide adequate protection by making
it difficult for the "outlaws" to find and gain
entry to your computer.
