When a user attempts to access data through a browser, media
player or Instant Messaging Application, the ProxySG
server intercepts the initial request and checks authentication
with Active Directory, LDAP or Radius services. Once the user
is authenticated, the request is checked for approval (by
content filtering category, time,site, application, protocol
or IM type; message, chat, voice, file transfer).
If approved the ProxySG
speeds data to the user. When the data arrives, it is checked
against virus and for malicious code before being sent to
the user. Logs are kept for each user. Even though the ProxySG
performs these functions, its parallel requests improve user
response time.
Content Filtering: ProxySG
appliances integrate the three most popular content
filtering databases: Websense, SurfControl and Secure Computing's
SmartFilter. Users can be given or denied access to sites
by category and depending on their authentication credentials
(user, group, time of day etc.) Additional company-specific
sites can be added to the list.
Web Virus Scanning: ProxySG
appliances forward content to web virus-scanning servers
(from Trend Micro or Symantec). The built in caching of clean
content and management policies to bypass scanning for known
virus-free objects ensures that web virus scanning is high
performance and secure.
Content Security: ProxySG
appliances can stop attachments leaving the company
via web-mail or posting to web pages. Malicious code entering
can be stopped directly or sent for checking to Finjan Surfingate
Systems.
Instant Messenger Traffic Control:
ProxySG appliances
control IM traffic to AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft public servers.
The ProxySG can allow,
deny, strip attachments, deny voice/video services over IM,
log all messages and block on keyword use.
Bandwidth Management: ProxySG
appliances can provide proxy services for streaming
data, reducing the load on WAN links by restricting individual
or total streaming bandwidth, caching and stream splitting.
