Aker
Kvaerner benefits from DSL and VPN technology supplied by
Cisilion.
Aker Kvaerner is a world-class international oil services
and products, engineering construction and shipbuilding Group
with the capability and resources to undertake the world's
most challenging projects.
James Simpson, a Network Analyst at Aker Kvaerner E&C
Division explains that with Cisilion's advice and guidance,
the local IT department has implemented a pilot test for a
Virtual Private Network over ADSL
technology.
James contacted Cisilion after having decided on ADSL technology
as a more cost effective solution for the replacement of the
existing ISDN link. Cisilion were able to provide guidance
and technical expertise in deploying the technology in the
short time frame required to meet the project's needs.
James comments: "The reason
that we are testing VPN is that we expect a major cost saving,
with the overall cost to be recovered in the first year. ADSL
will provide us with a higher bandwidth for a lower cost that
is also a fixed cost, enabling us to accurately build the
cost into our budgets. The main benefits will be the cost
savings and a minimum four fold improvement in bandwidth using
the 512 Kbps ADSL download service."
VPN's reduce the cost of remote users coming back into the
network. Users need only dial into a local service provider,
so the cost is only that of a local call, or in the case of
users who pay a monthly fixed Internet fee, the connection
is virtually free. Read more about the business
benefits of VPNs.
James continues: "I have been
purchasing Cisco products for nearly 5 years now as they offer
the best software and troubleshooting support. We have been
working with Cisilion since March this year, they have great
overall knowledge of the Cisco product line and they have
high quality certified network specialists."
The VPN pilot has been ongoing for the past few months and
due to its success, will form a platform for other sites being
moved over to DSL VPN solutions within the near future.
